Will I be the Correct Blood Type?!

The local Quest Lab was able to draw blood for me on May 2nd, and it was an excruciating 49 hours until the results arrived in my email inbox.

My husband’s blood type is A+ (A positive), so I’d be looking for A+, A-, or an O blood-type to be compatible for him.

All I had to do for this appointment, was log into www.QuestHealth.com, find the closest location, and choose my appointment for blood-type testing. Luckily they had a Women’s Health discount for that month so it was only $26!

MTI (Miami Transplant Institute) uses specific laboratories, but depending on where you live and what hospital you’re connected to, it may be different than my personal experience here in South Florida.

You do not need to fast before this type of blood draw, but make sure you have your ID and your appointment info easily accessible. Most laboratories require you to digitally sign in by scanning your ID in the lobby, and some may even request a QR code from your appointment confirmation. You never know how good the internet will be so you want to have that ready ahead of time!

As you can see, I got a needle in both arms! This is not common practice. I was simply cold and non-responsive to the vein the phlebotomist first attempted to access. It happens! I personally choose not to watch the needle when it goes in, but everyone is different.

When the test results finally reached me two days later, I had been checking my email hourly. I was as nervous as a cat on hot bricks! I had never looked at a blood type test before, but the moment that page finally loaded, I read each line carefully.

“ABO Group: Your Result “A”, “RH(D) positive”.

My heart dropped. I was an exact match! Not just compatible. Not just similar. An exact match.

We spent the day silently celebrating what we hoped was just the first of the good news.
